Nothing is what it seems to be
Who am I?
I am Jo Tummers, born with the condition spina bifida aperta, better known as the ‘heavy’ form of what is popularly called ‘an open back’. From a medical point of view, nothing can be done about this condition, but there are a number of consequences which can be treated. I will also tell you a lot about this in this blog, but not too much, because it must be a cheerful blog that is fun to read.
I am someone who is positive in life. I think it is important to see the positive sides of a situation, even if they sometimes don’t seem to be there. I think it is important to see the positive sides of a situation, even if they sometimes don’t seem to be there.
Having a physical disability is seen by society as a bad thing: you don’t want this and the life of people with a disability will be very difficult at best.
I hope to be able to change this idea somewhat with this blog. Of course, having a disability is not fun, but many people who have a disability are not busy with it all day. That is why I put the word heavy in quotes at the beginning of this page. It is about how you as a disabled person experience it and much less about what it means in the perception of ‘healthy’ fellow human beings.
I can be brief about that: of course I have had the necessary choices and I still have challenges. But there is a lot of good left, so I can honestly say that I have a very nice and exciting life.
